I purchased the Fall River Chest Pack after returning the Allen Bear Creek pack, which was a bit too small for my needs. The Fall River pack strikes for me the perfect balance between compactness and utility, and I’ve spent many days wading lakes and rivers with it comfortably strapped to my chest. There are certainly larger packs available, but I find that everything I need other than my lunch fits into this pack and keeps me from feeling overburdened and unbalanced when fishing. I usually have 3 or 4 fly boxes in the main compartment, and 4 or 5 spools of tippet in the zippered front pouch, which has a tippet holder attached. in the other zippered pockets I keep extra leaders, strike indicators and split shot containers. I use the rings on either side of the main pouch to attach hemostat, dry fly oil, and nippers on zingers. My landing net with magnetic release is clipped via carabiner to the big O-ring on the back of the neck strap pad, and when attached helps balance the weight evenly on my shoulders. The waist belt keeps everything from shifting as I move about, and serves as a safety belt for my waders.
This is the second Fall River pack I’ve purchased–I lost the neck strap to the first one when my kayak overturned in a creek and I had it detached. My second pack encountered a sewing problem on the neck strap and Allen Company promptly sent me a new pack. I couldn’t be happier with their customer service.
If you like to fly fish and travel light, I highly recommend the Allen Fall River Chest Pack.
Top Critical Review
I bought this chest pack because of the workstation. But the flap that makes up the station only opens about 30 degrees. Not 90 like is pictured. I cut the 2 sides (that were preventing the flap from opening all the way) and added some paracord straps to hold at a 90 degree angle when open. Other than that I was pleasantly surprised that the big pocket held 4 of my skinny fly boxes. There are 2 pockets inside the big compartment and one pocket inside the little compartment. There are 3 D rings for nippers, hemostats and anything else you might want to hang off of the pack.
Customer Questions & Answers
Can I fit 10x 42 binoculars in the big bag?
Answer: The inside of the large compartment measures 5.5″ wide, 3.5″ deep and about 10″ high. That might help you determine the practicality.
What size handgun would fit in this chestpack
Answer: I have a Berretta Model 96 .40 cal. It fits nicely in the rear compartment with room for a couple of extra mags and a small flashlight. My Ruger Blackhawk with a 5 inch barrel will fit, but, it is pretty tight.
Can you fit two medium size fly boxes in the large pocket?
Answer: I don??t Fly fish so I don??t know what size a medium box is…. I can fit a small box and some bags of Baits… It??s got some room to stretch out a little bit
