Out of the box I had this together in 15 minutes. Out to my target I went, only to find the speed and power were far too great..
First arrow went sailing through removing the fetchings and burying the arrow… Second arrow was placed in the quiver only to be released on a new target.. oh yeah, follow the cocking instructions, I went with the “man” way and threw my back out.. wicked.
This is my first crossbow, the speed and power compared to my compound is amazing, it is loud compared to a compound so I am interested to see how the deer jump the string.
Bring on bow season (I’m still amazed they allow these in the same class as a bow).
I’m excited to get a target and put this beast to the test. So far I am amazed at the speed and power.
The scope is ok, but I’m sure there are better available. I will give this one a shot or two first.

Pros. It??s a good looking crossbow. I have owned a wildcat extreme and a C-5, I believe it was. Anyhow they were both good compound bows. Reading the reviews I decided to take a chance on a newer one. BIG MISTAKE! They will blame it on Covid because EVERYTHING is blamed on Covid. But, day one. Zeroed the scope that it came with. Had to max it out to the left and still is shooting to the right. ??Well you have to shim it???? Nope. If the scope and mounts are matching and machined correctly you should NOT have to do that. As you can see by the photos , the machining is piss poor to say the least. Good rings make for a good scope to firearm mount. That??s ok. I??m gonna strap a Vortex on this as soon as it arrives. Day 2 60 shots into this ordeal. 0730. The Rope cocking device. The right side hook fell apart 3/4th of the way drawn. I had the bow kick out from under my foot and I now have 4 broken ribs. I??m writing this review as I??m laying in a hospital bed. NOT COOL! I have tried all day to contact Barnett to ask where I should send this hospital bill. The Rope cocking device totally failed and it??s a defect. I have sent thousands of bolts down range and never once had a failure like this. I??m PISSED! Not only am I injured. I??m down for a hunting season. Period. All because of a $.35 cocking device that failed. Not quality at all! I would avoid ALL BARNETT purchases until they have a full staff and are doing better quality control. 1 small thing wrong is excusable. 2 things on the same crossbow spells a lack of care, quality, and ethics in general. I will settle this dispute with them but I will NEVER buy from them again. I feel I am really owed something for this. And I??m not some ??entitled?? snowflake. I??m a Vet who just got injured because of a subpar product.
Customer Questions & Answers
Can you mount the quiver side to side on the front ?
Answer: Unfortunately no. The way it attaches to the rail it won??t work
What are the differences between the barnett whitetail hunter str & the barnett whitetail hunter ii?
Answer: The STR is a newer model with the step thru stirrup on the shoot thru riser platform.
What is the draw weight on this rig ?
Answer: 185lbs. Feels like 60 with the rope cocking device it comes with.
is the Barnett whitetail hunter str made in the USA?
Answer: No they are not made in the USA THIS IS A LIE. However they??re still awesome
How well do the string dampeners work? Overall how quiet is the bow?
Answer: This is not quiet, in terms of not spooking something. But take that comment with a grain of salt. No crossbow I??ve ever owned has been very quiet. But it rockets the bolt out there before a reaction can be had by any animal. But all my suppressed rifles are 10x louder.
