I work as a guide in Alaska for about ten weeks every summer. Every day, all day, no scheduled days off so this little tool gets a workout keeping four rods tied and fishing with mostly novice fishermen. This is my favorite new tool of the year. It cuts precisely and clean, spectra and mono. I clip it on my hip so it’s always at hand. With the retractable line I can simply drop it and it goes back into place until I need it again. I always put my old cutters back in their place but hectic things happen, I don’t and I have to look around the boat for them when I have my hands full already. So I love this tool.

The only con: About halfway through the season it stopped retracting all the way and the cutting jaws not opening. I sprayed a heavy lube (NOT WD40, never use WD40 on a boat or around saltwater!) in it and overnight it worked again for the rest the season. I don’t think they were made for professional use. Next year I’ll get two or three for backup!

Top Critical Review

I fish almost exclusively with very light fly fishing tackle (5/6/7 x tippet) and while this line cutter had no problem cutting the line cleanly, it’s unwieldy to use around small flies and small knots. It’s large and the motion of squeezing the two “wings” to operate the mechanism makes it move a bit when trying to nip in close to a fly or a knot. In addition, the center of gravity of the device made it hang upside down from my lanyard so virtually every time I reached for it I would grab it upside down and have to turn it to get it the correct direction. I will definitely keep this in my pack for the rare occasion when I need to cut braided or thicker mono leaders or fly line. But for the regular operations of cutting tippet I’ll stick with a standard nipper.

Customer Questions & Answers

Are the blades replaceable?
Answer: Great question. Replacement blades are not currently available for the Snips series.

These stopped cutting braid cleanly after two uses. Is this normal or is there something I can do so they work again?
Answer: This is not a normal problem with these cutters. I have used mine for a long time and they cut braid with no problem. I do not know of any tips to get them to work. I would return them.

can you recommend a blade that will cut tool steel?
Answer:

Your question is not in the context of this tool which only cleanly cuts braided fishing line. Braided fishing line is NOT made of metal. I don not know of any ‘blade that will cut tool steel.’ It has to be some kind of cutting wheel that is made of carbide or imbedded with industrial diamond dust. Therefore I cannot??
