This is a great combo for kids to start fishing. It comes with everything you need and is simple for beginners to learn how to cast. In fact this is the type of reel I started learning on before moving onto spinning and conventional gear.

You press the button and hold down and release to cast. When you crank it automatically engages the reel. You can also click it down to engage freespool, and then pressing the button will lock the line in place till you release.

Overall great price and combo for any young kid getting into fishing.

Me and my daughters took up fishing as a way to spend time together. I ordered this pole as an introduction spincast Rod. We were so excited, however the rod broke the first time we took it out. It was a waste of money. There were some good things in the Tackle Box. However I would advise against purchasing this. Spend a little extra money and get a better quality product.

Answer: The ring is there just to keep the line on the pole (because it??s pre strung for you) until your ready to put lure on the line.
